Which airport should I fly into for Provence?
The best airport depends first on where you are staying, then on the flights from your home city. Four airports serve Avignon and the surrounding area, each with its own strengths:
- Marseille-Provence (Marignane): the widest choice of scheduled and low-cost flights, about 1 hour from Avignon and the Luberon.
- Nîmes-Garons: mainly low-cost flights, including routes to the UK and Belgium, about 45 minutes from Avignon and well placed for the Gard, Arles and the Alpilles.
- Avignon-Provence: minutes from central Avignon, mostly business and private aviation, plus a few seasonal routes.
- Montpellier-Méditerranée: about 1h15 from Avignon, a useful alternative when its flights suit you better.
Before booking, compare the total journey time, not just the flight. A slightly longer flight into an airport closer to your villa can save time once you land.
What is the closest airport to the Luberon?
For a commercial flight, Marseille-Provence is usually the most convenient airport for the Luberon, about 1 hour from Gordes, Bonnieux or Lourmarin. If you fly private, Avignon-Provence is the closest, about 40 minutes from the villages. Nîmes also works, but the drive is longer.
Which airport for which part of Provence?
A few simple pointers:
- Avignon, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Marseille or Nîmes, depending on flights; Avignon-Provence for private jets.
- The Alpilles (Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Les Baux, Eygalières): Nîmes and Marseille are about the same distance, roughly 45 to 50 minutes.
- Pont du Gard, Uzès, Nîmes: Nîmes-Garons is closest; Montpellier also works well.
- Arles and the Camargue: Nîmes-Garons, about 30 minutes from Arles.
- Mont Ventoux, Carpentras, Vaison-la-Romaine: Marseille, about 1h15 from Carpentras.
- Aix-en-Provence: Marseille, about 30 minutes away.
Can I fly into one airport and out of another?
Yes. Many travellers land in Marseille and fly home from Nîmes, or the other way round, depending on flight times. Your driver takes you to whichever airport you choose, at the right terminal.
This works especially well for touring holidays: a few nights in the Luberon, then a few nights in the Alpilles or near the Pont du Gard. We can also drive you between your accommodations, with or without a sightseeing stop along the way.
Prefer the train? Avignon TGV station is another easy way in, with direct high-speed trains from Paris in under 3 hours.
How does an airport transfer work?
The process is the same at every airport. You send us your flight number, the number of passengers and bags, and your destination address. The price is fixed in advance, per vehicle rather than per person. Your driver tracks the flight, meets you in arrivals with a name sign and helps with your luggage.
Choosing a vehicle:
- Classic (1 to 3 passengers) or sedan with standard luggage;
- Classic Premium for business travellers or a more comfortable arrival;
- 7-seat van for families, groups, golf bags or bikes, depending on volume.
For departures, we agree the pick-up time with you based on your flight, the distance and the season. In July and August, especially on Saturdays, the A7 and A9 motorways are often busy, so we build in extra time.
Prices for each airport and destination are on our rates page.
