Les Baux & Saint-Rémy
Private Driver to Les Baux-de-Provence and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
In the heart of the Alpilles, Les Baux-de-Provence is a village perched on a rocky spur, crowned by the ruins of its fortress. Just below, the Carrières des Lumières project immersive exhibitions onto the walls of a former quarry. Nearby, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence keeps the memory of Van Gogh, who painted much of his work here.
- The Château des Baux and the car-free village.
- Carrières des Lumières: immersive light and sound exhibitions.
- Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery where Van Gogh stayed, the ancient site of Glanum, the Wednesday market.
- The Alpilles: olive groves, vineyards and quiet roads.
Our options: Avignon ↔ Saint-Rémy (about 30 min) from 73 € · Avignon TGV ↔ Les Baux from 77 € · Full day Alpilles on request.
How far is Les Baux-de-Provence from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence?
About 15 minutes by car, on a small road that crosses the Alpilles hills. That short hop is what makes it easy to see both villages in a single day, with proper time in each.
A few benchmarks to plan your day:
- Les Baux: allow two to three hours for the village, the castle and the Carrières des Lumières.
- Saint-Rémy: about an hour and a half for the old town and Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, longer if you add Glanum.
- Arles is around 25 minutes from Les Baux, if you want to head towards the Camargue on another day.
A typical Alpilles day trip
- Morning in Les Baux. Arrive early: the village is car-free and fills up by midday. Your driver drops you as close to the entrance as possible.
- Carrières des Lumières in late morning. It stays cool inside all year, so bring a light layer even in summer.
- Lunch in Maussane-les-Alpilles or at a country restaurant in the valley.
- Afternoon in Saint-Rémy: the old town with its galleries and shops, then Saint-Paul-de-Mausole and Glanum, just south of town. Opposite Glanum stand Les Antiques, a Roman mausoleum and arch you can see from the roadside.
- Back to Avignon in the late afternoon, about 30 minutes.
Wednesday morning is market day in Saint-Rémy, and the whole town comes alive. If you visit that day, swap the order and start in Saint-Rémy.
Why hire a private driver in the Alpilles?
- Parking: in both Les Baux and Saint-Rémy it is paid, some distance from the centre and often full in season. Your driver drops you off and picks you up at the door.
- Narrow roads: the road up to Les Baux is tight and winding, with viewpoints where it is not always easy to stop on your own.
- Tasting: the Alpilles produce wine and highly regarded olive oil. With a chauffeur, you can taste without worrying about the drive home.
- Waiting time: your driver stays available during every visit, and your shopping stays in the car.
Who is this day trip for?
- Art lovers: Van Gogh in Saint-Rémy, immersive shows at the Carrières, and art galleries in Saint-Rémy's old town.
- History buffs: the ancient site of Glanum and the medieval fortress of Les Baux.
- Golfers: there are several courses around the Alpilles. Your driver can take you to the first tee and collect you after your round, with golf bags depending on the vehicle.
- Cyclists: the quiet Alpilles roads are popular with riders. The van can carry bikes, depending on volume.
- Weddings: many receptions are held in country estates in the Alpilles. We run guest shuttles.
What else is there to see around the Alpilles?
- Eygalières, a hilltop village east of Saint-Rémy, quieter and much loved.
- Fontvieille and the windmill linked to the writer Alphonse Daudet.
- Tarascon and its castle on the Rhône, about 20 minutes from Saint-Rémy.
- The Pont du Gard, ideal for another day: see our Pont du Gard page.
