How do you choose the right Provence day tour?
Start with three questions: when you are travelling, what you enjoy, and how fast you like to go. Here is a quick guide to our tours.
- History: Roman Provence (Orange and Vaison-la-Romaine) or the Pont du Gard with Uzès and Nîmes.
- Wine: the Rhône wine tour, from Châteauneuf-du-Pape to the Dentelles de Montmirail.
- Hilltop villages: the Luberon or the Alpilles.
- Visiting in June or July: the lavender route.
- Nature and sport: Mont Ventoux, by bike or simply for the view.
Half day or full day?
A half day (about 4 hours) covers one main site and one smaller stop, such as the Pont du Gard and Uzès, or Gordes and Sénanque. A full day (about 8 hours) allows three or four stops and a proper lunch.
Our advice: on a first visit, two well-chosen half days beat one overloaded full day. Provence roads are beautiful but often slow, and summer heat encourages a gentler pace.
Which day is market day in Provence?
Provençal markets set the rhythm of the week, and it is easy to build one into your tour. The best known:
- Tuesday: Vaison-la-Romaine, Gordes.
- Wednesday: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
- Thursday: L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.
- Friday: Carpentras, Lourmarin.
- Saturday: Uzès, Apt.
- Sunday: L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, for the big food and antiques market.
Markets are held in the morning. Put the market first and the sightseeing in the afternoon.
What does your driver do during the tour?
Simple: you explore, and your driver takes care of everything else.
- Pick-up at your hotel, holiday rental, the train station or the river cruise quay in Avignon.
- Drop-off as close as possible to each site, with no parking to find.
- Waiting time at every stop, with your belongings safe in the car.
- Changes on the day if you want to linger longer somewhere or add a stop.
When is the best season for a Provence day trip?
- Spring (April to June): villages in bloom, perfect walking temperatures, and cherry blossom around Mont Ventoux.
- Summer (July and August): lavender, the Avignon Festival and long evenings. Set off early and choose cooler stops such as Fontaine-de-Vaucluse or the Carrières des Lumières.
- Autumn (September and October): grape harvest, golden vineyards and fewer crowds.
- Winter: truffle markets, quiet villages and major sights with no queues.
Keep the mistral in mind too. When this strong northerly wind blows, the top of Mont Ventoux and some viewpoints become uncomfortable, and your driver can suggest a more sheltered alternative.
Who are our day tours for?
Couples, families (child seats on request), groups of up to 7 in a van, river cruise passengers on a port day, and business travellers with a free half day. If you would rather plan your own schedule, hourly chauffeur hire is a flexible alternative. For a day among the hilltop villages, see our Luberon private driver page.
Tell us your date, your pick-up point and what you would like to see. We will suggest a route and send a fixed price per vehicle, not per person.
