The Sorgue river near L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

Private Driver to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and Fontaine-de-Vaucluse

Crossed by branches of the Sorgue river, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is nicknamed the "Venice of Provence" and is one of Europe's capitals of antiques and second-hand treasures. A few kilometres away, the Sorgue springs from the foot of a cliff at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.

Our options: Avignon TGV ↔ L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (about 30 min) from 90 € · Market & antiques morning with waiting time (your purchases stay in the boot) on request · Half day with Fontaine-de-Vaucluse on request.

Tip: on Sundays the town is busy from 9 am. Arrive early.

How do you make the most of the Sunday market in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue?

Arrive early and have a plan. On Sunday mornings, the food market and the antiques and flea market spread along the riverbanks and through the town centre. Two or three hours is enough to see the best of it.

Our suggested morning:

  1. Arrive around 8:30 or 9 am. Your driver drops you close to the centre while the car parks are still filling up.
  2. Browse the antiques and flea stalls first, when the choice is widest.
  3. Move on to the food market: cheeses, olives, seasonal fruit and local produce.
  4. Visit the antiques villages in late morning for larger pieces.
  5. Lunch by the water, then on to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse or back to your hotel.

Your driver stays reachable throughout. You can drop your first finds in the boot and head back out with free hands.

How far is Fontaine-de-Vaucluse from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue?

About 15 minutes by car. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse takes one to two hours: you walk up beside the Sorgue to the spring at the foot of the cliff. The path is easy, with a gentle climb at the end.

What you see depends on the season. In spring, after rain, the water can overflow the pool and tumble down in cascades. In summer the spring is often calmer, and the striking green colour of the water is the main attraction.

In the village you can also visit the house where the poet Petrarch lived, and watch paper being made the traditional way at the mill.

Kayaking down the Sorgue

Several outfitters offer kayak trips down the Sorgue from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. The water is cool and clear, and the route suits beginners. Your driver can drop you at the start and collect you at the finish. Check the opening season with the outfitter before you go.
