Montpellier or Marseille: which airport is better for Avignon?
Marseille-Provence is slightly closer to Avignon, about 1 hour compared with 1h15 from Montpellier. The difference is small, though, and Montpellier is often the smarter choice in three cases:
- Your flights are more direct, more frequent or cheaper from your home airport.
- You are staying in the Gard: Nîmes, Uzès, the Pont du Gard or the west bank of the Rhône.
- Your trip starts in the Camargue or on the coast before heading up into Provence.
The drive from Montpellier to Avignon follows the A9 motorway, passing south of Nîmes. It is a simple, direct route, but a busy one in summer.
Where is Montpellier airport?
Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport is in Mauguio, east of Montpellier, between the city and the sea. From there, the A9 motorway towards Nîmes and Avignon is close by, so there is no need to drive through central Montpellier.
When you land, your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign. We track your flight and adjust to any delay, and your chauffeur helps you load your luggage.
Can I stop on the way from Montpellier to Provence?
Yes. If you mention it when booking, your driver can stop and wait for you, turning the transfer into a first taste of the region:
- Aigues-Mortes, a medieval walled town on the edge of the Camargue, not far from the airport;
- Nîmes, about 45 minutes away, with its Roman arena and the Maison Carrée;
- The Pont du Gard, about 1 hour away, for a break by the Gardon river;
- Arles, about 1 hour away, on the way to the Alpilles.
An hour's stop is usually enough for a quick visit and lunch. The waiting time is included in your quote.
When is the A9 motorway busiest?
The A9 is one of the busiest motorways in France during the summer holidays. On Saturdays in July and August, when holiday rentals change over, traffic jams between Montpellier and Nîmes are common. For your flight home, we agree the pick-up time with you and build in a comfortable margin.
Outside these peak periods, the drive is steady and the usual journey time holds.
Who is this transfer best for?
