Avignon Centre station
Avignon Centre Station Transfers
Not to be confused with Avignon TGV: Avignon Centre station is right opposite the city walls, just outside Porte de la République. It serves regional TER trains (Marseille, Arles, Carpentras, Orange…), the shuttle to Avignon TGV and some mainline trains.
Where will my driver meet me? In front of the station building, on the city-walls side, with a name sign.
| Destination | Travel time | From |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels inside the walls / Villeneuve-lès-Avignon | about 10 min | 40 € |
| Avignon TGV station | about 15 min | 40 € |
| Luberon | about 45 min | 112 € |
| Marseille-Provence Airport | about 1 h | 222 € |
| Avignon-Provence Airport | about 15 min | 41 € |
Tip: check your ticket. If you're on a TGV, you will most likely arrive at Avignon TGV, not Avignon Centre.
Why book a driver at Avignon Centre station?
Because the station is in town, but your accommodation may not be. From Porte de la République, the Cours Jean-Jaurès leads on foot towards Place de l'Horloge and the Palais des Papes. That is easy with a backpack; it is far less fun with two large suitcases on cobblestones, or when your holiday rental is a village 40 minutes away.
A private driver makes sense in three common situations:
- You are staying inside the city walls, on a narrow or pedestrian street: your driver drops you as close to the door as traffic rules allow.
- You are heading on to a village in the Vaucluse or the Alpilles that regional trains do not reach.
- You are switching stations or catching a flight, with luggage and a tight schedule.
Which trains stop at Avignon Centre?
Mostly regional TER trains: lines to Marseille, Arles, Orange, Carpentras, Cavaillon and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, plus the shuttle train to Avignon TGV. A few mainline trains also call here. If you are coming direct from Paris on a high-speed TGV, you will almost certainly arrive at Avignon TGV station instead; book your pick-up there and skip the extra connection.
How long does it take from Avignon Centre to nearby towns?
Outside rush hour, allow about 10 minutes to a hotel inside the walls or to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, and about 45 minutes to the Luberon. Other useful drive times:
- Avignon TGV station: about 15 minutes.
- Avignon-Provence Airport: about 15 minutes.
- Châteauneuf-du-Pape: about 25 minutes.
- Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Les Baux: about 30 minutes.
- Marseille-Provence Airport: about 1 hour.
At the end of the working day, traffic on the boulevards around the ramparts slows down. Your driver allows for this, especially before a flight.
Visiting in July during the Avignon Festival
In July the Festival d'Avignon transforms the city: crowded streets, tighter car access inside the walls, and long taxi queues after evening performances. A few practical tips:
- Book your transfer early, as soon as you know your train time.
- Leave extra time for late-afternoon runs back to the station or airport.
- Consider hourly hire if you plan to see several shows in one evening, or if you are staying outside Avignon and coming back late. Your chauffeur waits for you at the exit.
